in a MM&FF mag i have did a test on 10 heads on a 331 stroker(Stock,GT-40X,Windsor light,Ford Racing Z304,Canfield 192,Roush 200,Twisted Wedge,Edelbrock Performer RPM,Brodix M2,Airflow Research 185). They predidcted the M2 head would make the most power since it flowed the most but they were wrong. On the dyno the AR 185 head made the most power and it flowed less!!M2=434hp and 437 tq, AF=448hp and 445 tq). The reason for the AR head making more power while flowing less is exhaust gas pulses but while on a flowbench the air doesnt pulse. M2 head had larger ports which allowed it to flower more but with less gas velocity. So you cant always judges a head on how much it flows. Also the Roush 200 head came in 3rd from the bottom with 391hp and 412 tq but only cost $839 while all others were over a grand.

Look just go on E bay or check mustang sites for some heads already done. I picked up my GT40P heads and Mac headers for 500.00 even. Heads were complete. But if you a Brandnew guy and have tons of money got for the AFR 185 or 165s. I would go 186s cause you gonna want more power after a month or 2 of driving. 300 Hp becomes slow.

I am thinking about using the 351w heads since we have a few sets lying around. However, if you want good ones you have to get heads made in 1973 or earlier. The 1974 and up heads suck and are no better than 302 heads. pre 1973 351W heads flow similar to GT40 iron heads. Try to find some older castings, shave a little and do a home port job and you should get a nice gain. Dont forget, with the older heads you have to use stud mount rockers. Good Luck!

When I read the title of this thread, I thought you guys were talking about 351 Cleveland heads. Heh. 302+ 4V 351C heads = instaBOSS 302.

But not as easy as it sounds...both heads and block require machine work...and a $pecial intake manifold.
