Shut off your fuel pump so the engine won't fire, then just "bump" it bit by bit with the key in the ignition. If all of your spark plugs are out and you've got a buddy to help the best way is to have them turn the engine over with a ratchet on the crank bolt. Stick some long thin thing in the plug hole on the #1 cylinder (don't let it fall in, obviously) and you'll be able to feel the piston at TDC. Turn the engine over until you can just feel the piston move down (or at least not up anymore), and you're there.

well i did it both ways but can't you find the 0 mark on the timing marks and turn the crankshaft until it's on 0*. i did that and it worked perfectly

Thats what I did, worked like a champ!

By the way (forgot to mention this first post), you need to make sure that you're on the compression stroke. Like the article said, plug the spark plug hole fully with your finger and have someone crank the engine, when you feel air getting compressed that means that you're, surprise surprise, on the compression stroke

While you're doing that, notice the valves. All engines work with sister cylinders, meaning the crank has at least 2 throws journals facing the same way. The two are opposites.
So that's why you watch for Top dead center with the valves : you'll see this when the exhaust valve is close, but before it's fully closed, the intake valve starts opening.
Now if that means that the exhaust just finnished, then the sister cylinder should be on compression, which is opposite ofexhaust, since they're both going up.(UP1:compresion DOWN1owerstroke UP2:exhaust DOWN2:intake).
On compression, all your valves are closed, so you can adjust them
If you keep that in mind and try to notice when you see this happening, then you'll find your valve adjustments will go MUCH easier. You just have to find TDC on 1, find the firing order of the cylinders, turn the engine 45 degrees...And there's the next cylinder to be adjusted!
But like mention DO NOT forget to disconect the fuel pump, cause the last thing you want is cranking an engnine...Then it starting with possibly tools there, or fingers, and some oil going every which way.
