New Car to me Need Help 2 things
First off Ijust bought an 86 Gt from a fellow on the site Thanks Jim I love the car. she ran great the way home.
1. Anyways here is the deal I have anoil leak from thein the main engine seal which has to be replaced. My mechanic said it would be 450.00 because he has to pullout the trans (manual)for the job is that a good price and should anything else be replaced while the trans is off?
2 I was driving home last night everything was fine I pulled over to make a phone call then pulled back on the road when I went to stop the brake peddle was hard to push down I had to stand on it to make the car stop and it did not stop in a normal or short distance. After stopping I noticed that the idel was upto about 1700 rpmsin nuteral while stopped almost like the auto choke was on. The brake peaddle remained hard and the rpms stayed high the rest of the way home (3 miles). I checked it the next afternoon and the peaddle was still hard and the rpms still up.
All gauges read fine car shifts fine clutch feels fine
Both problem happened at the exact same time so what ever is causing one is diffinately causing the other.
Any idea what could cause this or where to start?
Could the oil that is leaking have got on something and caused some type of electric or computer issue?
Anyone fellow mustang members that are in the central NJ union county area that works on Mustangs that could takea look?
thanks
Mike

RE: New Car to me Need Help 2 things
for the tranny job, u should replace the clutch (the whole kit) and flywheel, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing while he has it taken apart.
as far as the brake problem i can only GUESS that its a vacuum leak with the brake booster since both the rpms are high and the brake is hard

agreed, i would do a whole clutch job while it's all out, and maybe catback (or more) too
it all has to come out, might as well replace it all w/ a motorsport heavy duty.
you might be able to resurface the flywheel, as long as it hasn't been done like 5 times already, they will mic it int he machine shop, resurface is $30 compared to a new one at $200 or so
you really should do it yourself, 1 afternoon and basic tools , nothing special , airtools will speed it up though.
removing the exhaust is tha hardest if it hasn't come off in a long while, but after that it's a matter of 4 trans to bellhousing bolts, then pop out the bell housing, then the pressure plate has like 8 10mm bolts.
after you've done it and know what your in for you can honestly swap out a clutch or tranny in about 2 hours flat.
i'd save that 4 bills for something better , like a brand new header back exhaust. no sense giving it away on a job that is very easy, just takes some time is all.
