89 5.0 basic upgrades?
i was wondering what are your expierences with this particualr mustang. power, handeling, overal ride, relaiablilty and so forth. i would also like to know what you might recomend forsome more power, but still not too much to where its unsable as a daily driver. i was thikning a 331 stroker with maybe a supercharger or turbocharger and some oher standered modification, but i have seen videos and that seems like alot of power, probably too much for me. i have herd from some people about how the 302 is a horible engine, but alot of other people have said its great, about how much is the comfortable limit of the engines as far as adding on and rebuilding it goes, i want to go as far as possible with the original engine, i dnt want to have to shell out the 5- 9 grand for a crate engine unless thats the best option. i also plan to use the car for recreational drag racing ( all leagal of course). i have a rough wish list of parts i plan on getting, i understand the basics of mechanics having read about it and sen it alot, i also do extensive work on small engines (quad engines) i have never really had a car to work on though so i dont no much yet. this seems like an awsome forum, and im srry if i sound like an idiot for saying this, im just excited and getting ahead of myself [sm=badbadbad.gif]

RE: 89 5.0 basic upgrades?
Look into 94-95 ford explorer intake, its a GT40 and is better than the ones in the cobra. I upgraded the exhaust, x pipe-cat back and such, new headers most definetly, and tougher shocks for cornering, new front brakes, and get rid of the drums in the back. The 5.0 motor is wonderful, it will last forever and hold alot of power.
subrame and strut tower braces help too
but thats just what I've done
PS i know nothing about CAI

RE: 89 5.0 basic upgrades?
Welcome to the forums! Fords 302 is a great power plant for the daily driver or the weekend warrior. There is a lot of aftermarket support, and the motors are fairly easy to work on. I wouldn't start a project by slapping on a supercharger or turbo unless I had a clear view of what I wanted the outcome to be. I found that the best way to begin a project is by upgrading the exhaust and intake. an aftermarket air intake and a catback exhaust/ headersis a great way to free up some extra horsepower. from there you could upgrade your fuel system with high flow injectors, a new fuel filter, and maybe a new fuel pump. Suspention is great way to change the way the car drives. new springs, struts/shocks, and sway bars can tighten up your cornering and provide better handling. You could always re-gear your rear end. Simple stuff like this can change the way your car drives, for better performance, and you can ALWAYS upgrade from there.

1st mods is to remove the air silencer and get a k+n drop in filter if you dont alsready have one then bump the timing for more power and better fuel economy then do the more expensive mods like exhaust, hci(heads, cam, intake) etc

RE: 89 5.0 basic upgrades?
If I was to do it all over again this is what I would do:
Lower gears
Catback exhaust forthe nice sound
70mmor 75mmTbody
Intake manifold to match the Tbody
Supercharger or Turbo with applicable fuel upgrades
Depending on how many miles are on the motor I might look into doing a rebuild on it before adding a supercharger or turbo.
Take it from a guy that spent gobs of money on doing all the bolt-ons with a H/C/I and still ended up buying a supercharger anyway...
