Default alternator problem

I have a powermaster chrome 140 amp alternator ...PWM-8-37141 (from summit)

it bolts right in the factory spot and looks and worked great. it only has 1 wire coming off the back which is an 8 gauge wire going to the battery. it knows to turn on when the engine revs to 2000 rpm or higher.

The last time it worked(friday) i was driving home from work and it went out about 20 mins from home. i had no choice but to keep driving even though the volt gauge was 1 line above red. It ended up coming back on when i was getting close but the next 2 times starting it didnt kick on so i didnt drive the car..... this sucks and i dont want to spend 275 bucks on another one.

any ideas ?? has anyone else had any problems with these ??

I just installed powermaster black 140 amp alternator. It seems to be working when I rev the motor. I haven't drove the because my tranny is goingout.

Yeah, you need to connect your volt gauge to the proper terminal on the alt. Also, you need to d/c the factory voltage regulator if you have one, as the PM has a built in internal regulator(the tag that came on it should say what it was tested/set at). My black 140amp works great

i've never heard of such a thing, that wouldn't be a very good alternator for anyone running a good amount of electronics, would it... ?

my headlights dim enough as it is at idle.. no alt running would be rediculous

thank god winter is over, that blower motor draws some serious amperage at high speed

once you rev it up the alternator always works.... only when you start your car... if it starts and doesnt rev to 2000rpm on its own.. then the alternator stays off... once you rev it past 2 it stays on until it fully stops for awhile. not everytime it goes below 2000. it works great.

It's internally regulated/switched, when you start the car and the alternator rpm gets high enough the switch turns the alternator "on" and it closes the circuit to allow the system to charge. Once it's on it stays on until the alternator stops spinning and the switch opens back up. Voltage is regulated by the alternator's built in regulator. It's called a 1 wire setup cuz you just run 1 wire to the positive terminal on the battery
