Smaller duration cams give you more low end torque.There is 4* of difference between the E (220*) and B (224*) cams. We put the B cam in my buddies stang.You could feel more mid-high band power and had more of a lope to it, but it doesn't have CARB #. Oh yeah,i believethe CARB # for the E cam is only good for 5spd cars.
If you have a good set of gears, suspension, and nice tires to get you off the line then you don't have to worry about squeezing every bit of low end torque out of your engine.

i hope you guys are all talking about using new springs....... even .500 is the limit for stock springys, and .475 is pushing the envelope.

lift has nothing to do with PtV clearance. It has to do with overlap and duration.
and there is no "set rule" on lift... your best bet is to find a cam you like, and have the pistons notched to match
