you sure its not detonation? that sounds like a bunch of small pops, my explorer does the same exact thing. only above a certain RPM, only at 3/4 throttle or more.

detonation is caused by the combustion chamber temperature being too high. i've found Seafoam to work very well, it cured my father's Durango of it, by cleaning the intake and runners, it allows for cooler air flow. Also a colder spark plug, and colder air intake temps.

First, try knocking your timing down a bit. Set too high will cause detonation as well.

Does the car run ok in the higher r's? Or does it miss? If it was just detonation, the car would still run ok. If it's missing/breaking down, it's something else.

Adam you shouldn't have to run colder plugs w/ your set up. And I would def recomend finding out what the fuel pressure is at wot under load.

put some through the tank, that will clean up the injectors, maybe even give you a bit more PSI through there, cuz its still a tad low. mine doesn't drop below 39psi, ever.
more fuel = colder combustion temperatures

if you have the stock regulator, that could be why your only getting 30psi, or the vac line to it isn't in good shape.
