well thats probably your problem. no 289 came with a roller cam. Your trying to run a steep lobed hydraulic lifter cam onn roller lifters. In my opinion thats totally your problem. Roller and non-roller camshafts run different intake and exhaust profiles, you cant just switch from one to the other and have it work fine. the firing order thing can also be a problem, but i have a 351 cam in my car ground to roller specs and its technically the wrong firing order and it runs fine, maybe not perfect, but no problem like your having.
