it aint the driveshaft I bet, by by the way he describes it the tranny broke
Let me chime back in I read his post incorrectly, maybe the yoke snapped ?
I had a driveshaft let loose on my before on a 1966 mustang also on the parkway, you gots to make sure the U joints arent rusty or f'up

if the trans broke, the shaft would still be in the neck of the trans.

its cool you didnt get hurt man.i just put a loop on 2 weeks ago 35 bucks summit.and it only took like 25 minutes to install with a friend. good luck.and the ford aluminum driveshaft is good for like 500 horse or so.if your going to put out more power than that get a better aluminum driveshaft.

So, why was there fluid leaking out, that seems unusual, was the yoke fine or what?

Well i took it to Ford and it turns out my tranny was ripped to pieces in the dismantline process... So in go a custom built T5 Zspec, centerforce dual friction clutch kit, MGW shifter, and aluminum drive shaft.
