I think the body style is almost identical to the '85. That means it would have mouldings on the side that say GT. It would also have a V8 with fuel injection, and like willett said, check the vin.

A Few key items to look for.
86 5 speed is carbed.
86 auto is injected.
Sway bar front and rear.
"GT" in molding behind doors.
"POWERED BY FORD" Valve covers.
VIN decode is the easiest and most reliable way to be sure.

The main and almost only way to tell an 85 from an 86 is an 86 has the third brake light
