I don't know about the rest of the country, but here in So Cal the people that usually drive VWs are hot chicks (not dudes that race). The R32 was a nice ride from an import point of view, nothing special really.

Gotta agree. Although the VR6 VW motor with a nice exhaust sounds pretty good. The 2.0T motor in the GTi the OP mentioned does not compare at all sound wise to the 5.0L though. For additional power the 2.0T can be flashed with GIAC software to give it an extra 40-50 horses for about $350, but it is still a 4 cylinder. Also, IMO, the new VW's have too much Asian influence on thier design. For me it's hard to tell they are german cars.
