Yup. 'Got a used one from a 91' Explorer. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ayphotohosting
It had the original pinion bearing on it, and I was thinking that I could just bolt it on without having to mess around with shimming for the correct pinion depth. This was the selling point for me, since I'm on a budget.
I was right! I mocked it together and ran a pattern with some marking compound, and the pattern was perfect! My backlash was .010 with my original shim setup, so it was a total bolt on affair. BTW, it's totaly quiet with no howl whatsoever!
I got it for $80 to my door. I definitely recommend a used piece if it was an original factory install, and you can get the pinion with the original bearing still on it. It should bolt together just like mine did. (yes, Explorers came with an 8.8 axle)
My car gets it better than before. I should have ran a 3.73 in the first place instead of going for a 3.55; thinking I would get better mileage... My camshaft specified a 3.73 and a 5-speed in the first place. Always go with the camshaft manufactures recommendations!
