Default EGR question

I took the smog pipes off the car today and pluged the holes in the head. The pump has been bypassed since we got the car. Also I ran a self test a few months ago and got a code about the egr not opening. My question is does that mean the egr is basically blocked off or is it just not functioning. Also I dont have a CEL. I took the valve off and it smells like gas and oil.

egr is a completely different system than the smog pump, so if you have an egr code it has nothing to do w/ the pump. for a no flow code, the first thing i would do is while the engine is running, take offthe vacuum hose of the egr valve, and put the vacuum hose thats on the fuel pressure regulator on the egr valve. if the car noticably stumbles or stalls, the egr valve itself is working properly, if it makes no difference, the valve is stuck closed or the egr passages in the intake are clogged w/ carbon buildup. if it opens fine, then you can have a prob w/ the egr vacuum solenoid, the vacuum line between the solenoid and the valve is broken, or the sensor on top of the valve is bad.

I dont want it to function since its not nesseccary in NC. I just want to know if the code means its blocked off or just not working. I could less which it is im just curious if the previos owner did something to it. The car doesnt seem to be down any power and there is no CEL.

if the valve is still bolted to the side of the intake then i would say that its not blocked off, unless the solenoid just isnt plugged in or something. what year is your car? because until a certain year there actually was no cel light, i forget what year they started with the light,my 87 didnt have a cel light

Its a 93. I think we have a CEL. Its still bolted up. It had a lot of carbon on it but I dont hink it was stopped up. Its also pluged in. I guess the code came form teh vaccum line since they are all messed up on that little block that is near the AC accululator.

yeah, that little vacuum block usually is a mess, if you have the smog pump removed you really dont even need that ugly thing, just run individual vacuum lines to whatever still needs vacuum, i think all there is is the egr and the vacuum source for the heater box?
