Found this with on a quick search

[/align]The rear cover will tell you which one is installed, the 8.8 rear cover is more
flat alont its sides (square if you will) while the 7.5 is more round. If you
view the NEWS section of my website I have a picture of a 7.5 rearend and an
8.8 in a picture from the swap in our 97 5.0 coupe, you will be able to see the
differences between the two (7.5 on top, new 8.8 on bottom). On the right side
of the rearend cover will be a metal tag (visible in pictures) which will also
tell you what rearend size along with ratio is installed. an example would be 3
L 08 88 for a 3:08 Limited slip 8.8 or a 2 L 73 75 for a 2:73 7.5 Limited
slip, the absence of the L would be an open differential.
Hope this is helpful

If i were drag racing...
Swap out the stock 28 spline diff/axles for 31 spline atleast, maybe C-clip eliminators, and adjustable control arms. Or just forget the 8.8 altogether and put a 9 under there.
To swap in an 8.8 itll bolt right in to any 79-93.

I have a powertrax unit with carrier I bought off ebay for 31 spline axles for a musting 8.8
the listing had it for 28 spline guess what its 31(I have 28)if your going 31 spline axles just give me what i paid for it and its yours$200 bucks shipped...im installing umi lift bars in mine and ill let you know how they perform after this weekend...My rear is so bad its hitting the sway bar and scuffing the housing pretty bad 'bump clang, bump clang" love it
