when setting the timing, im setting mine to 10 degree's. Does the pointer have to line up with the 10 degree mark when the timing light flashes or should i be looking for the mark somewhere else?

when the light is flashing, the 10 should line up with the pointer. you should be able to run 12* for a little better throttle response without having to run higher octane. there is some one on here who always posts a link to a good how to set your timing page, hopefully that person will chime in
