Default help with distributor

alright, two months back my 95gt died while driving. I could crank but wasnt getting spark. took it in and the shop said the distributor gear was cracked. i got a used distributor. today i pulled the old one out and the gear was fine. i went to put the new one in and noticed that inside the engine about 3-4 inches the distributor fits into a donut of some sort a piece of which is cracked. anyone know what this is? i would have to pull the intake to get a better look.... it looks like this in its damaged form:

i put the distributor in anyway but do not want to try and start it until i know what the cracked piece is... any help is appreciated..

If that is a fat rubber o-ring I belive it is just usedin final assy. at ford and can be tossed out with no worries. Sence you already got a new distributor use it but if your old one's gear is fine did you try replacing the control module on the side of it? I have had to replace mine twice is a common failure. last time I was driving along it studdered ran about 2 more miles and died car cranks + distibutor turns + no spark = bad module.
