we are just taking baby steps, first round is going to be stock short block with eather GT-40 heads, or 70, 351W heads, and an intake, along with a built tranny, suspension, and a built rearend. then after we have fun with that/something comes apart we are going to start rebuilding the engine to make it faster.

A guy at the track with a bone stock motor, exhaust,4.10's, subframes, 200 shot and slicks was running 11.70's. I even looked under the hood and under the car, it was all stock.

Go with 69 or 70 351 heads, theyre better IMO. The GT-40P heads off of explorers are basically the same thing except you need special headers to run em.
+1 on ditching the AOD-E, its expensive to build and its not very durable unless you drop a grand or more in to it, also it NEEDS a computer otherwise it wont shift. If its strictly a track car I'd go with 4.30's or 4.56 [8D] and either an AOD or C-4.
I'd go carbuerated with a nice medium rise single plane intake (NOT a victor jr, 351 heads cant flow it), and a 650 double pumper.
Also, subframe connectors are a must. Dont waste your money on drag radials just get all out slicks 26x10.50 or something along those lines to fit on factory rims.
As for a cam, dont use any letter cam, ford heads need more lift and duration on the exhaust side, so get something along the lines of a TFS stage 1 cam.
-P.

theolder windsor heads are better they usually have samller combustion chambers 53-57 cc. i would use 4.30 with 28' tires and the f-cam because it works better at higher rpms which is where you will be except off the line also a 3500 or better stall is the way to go. are you gonna carb or fuel injection. if fuel injection you can use the explorer intake it flows the same as a gt-40 intake its just a solid cast piece. the mass air meter HOUSING ONLY off a 94 t-bird is a cheap mass air upgrade dont use the sensor itself just the housing. if your gonna carb the intake will be your choice there is plenty of cheap ones out there as for the carb a 650 holley will be plenty.

ok heres the auto tranny info!
aod and aode are just the same except aode use a computer and the aod uses tv pressure.
it does cost alot to rebuild them esp if you want to hold an *** load of power...but it will hold it...an aode/aod can be built to hold more than a built t5...i have read that several times...i could be wrong on the aod/aode and t5 comparision...
if its a track car then go with a c4...it can hold more and cheaper to buy and rebuild.
by the way the aode didnt go into mustangs will 94. all foxes have the aod.
a very good rebuilt aode and installed will run close to 2K...not a budget tranny by any means..but u wont have to deal with that tranny anyways.

they will fit, the 351w heads use larger headbolts. you need some washers to use them. early hi-po heads like you are looking for are hard to find. gt40p's flowmuchbetter and come on all 97 and newer 5.0 explorers. the chambers are smaller 59cc(vs 61cc)use long tube headers and change a couple plug boots to 90's and they work just fine.

i suggest a c4 with a hardend input shaft. its more efficent than the aod and stronger. the real weak link is the input shaft. the first time i broke one was when i was running 11.30's on a 289 in my old 87 lx. it was a 100shot and broke when i hit 3rd gear. change the shaft and they can hold quite a bit of power. it held all the way to 9.63 behind my old 421. thats launching off the brake at 4200rpm, and spraying a 150shot.

are you gunna carb or efi it? carb is much cheaper and easier to make power with. only other advise i have to make it as light as possiable. thats free hp
