Default newbie starting first mustang project without a clue of how to start

Hello fellow Mustangers. I am a first time user of this site. I just joined after christmas. Here is my problem. I recently acquired a 1979 hatchback with a 4cylinder and automatic trans. All in all the car is in bad shape. But I have scrapped the 4 cylinder and have since bought a 5.0 from a 1987. So here is my question. Which path do I follow in the customization of my new motor? Do I treat this project like it is a 79 or an 87? Thanks in advance for any help.

did u get the tranny for the 87 motor? what kink of mods are you planning? since the motor is an 87 you gonna have to convert to mass air before any mods like cam and full exhaust.

the engine and everything associated with it must be treated like the '87 that it is, the rest of the car is still a '79 and has to be treated as a '79.

Wouldn't it be easier to convert the motor to carburated?

yes but then you wouldn't have the reliablity and gas mileage of the fuel injected engine which is much more user friendly than one with a carburetor and the attendant problems inherent with carbs.

I just like them because I can fix them. I've had carbed cars with problems that ran terrible, but EFI cars with problems just don't run.

Besides who is looking for good gas mileage with a mustang?

hope you know what your doing man, you got one hell of a project on your hands. engine, tranny, computer, mass air conversion, all the wiring and snesors need to be bought and installed to make it fuel injected, your gona want to put a new rear end for sure 8.8, gonna need a heck of a lot of money and time. oh yeah i almost forgot you also need to upgrade the suspension too. unfortunately for all the money you'll be spending you could buy a mint 93 cobra and be fully satisfied, plus you'll get better resale value. now if it was a 79 with a 5.0 then it would be much more worth dropping some money into in my opinion cause then all you would need to do is upgrade you 7.5 rear end to 8.8 or better.

But if you keep the EFI instead of going with a carb, don't u have to get a computer and a wiring harness? I am planning on going with aluminum heads and probably change the cam. But i'm not sure what else to do yet. I'm open for suggestions though. I don't have a tranny yet because I don't have money to spend on the car right now. The tranny that was with the motor was an AOD. But I want to go with a manual. Hopefully a 6 speed.
