Default exhaust rattle

I have an exhaust rattle that is driving me nuts!! I cant find it anywhere. It only does it when the car is hot and when im on the gas it sounds like there is a large chunk of metal rattling around or in the exhaust, when i check it for rattles and shak the whole thing down from header to tailpipe, i get nothing that could ever sound like that. Could this be a catalytic converter going bad. Please help, im lost

might not be an exhaust rattle... might be detonation

Just from your description id have to agree with possible detonation. Check your plugs. healthy plugs will have a tannish-brown insulator with very little electrode wear.

If you have broken or cracked insulators then you have detonation which can ruin your pistons. Make sure your plugs are the right heat range.

Go grab a Haynes manual. Theres a great color chart for plugs inside the back cover.

I had that rattling problem in my sold 91 hatch. Damn thing ran me crazy. I was under the car several times and could not find it. When i rebuilt my rear end i checked again and it was an 02 sensor that was loose. I could not believe it could make that much noise but i tightened it up and no more rattle.

Check right tailpipe at the top of the hump where it goes over the axle. It is right up near the brake line and drove me nuts until I finnaly had it up on a lift.

i appreciate all of the input. today i was driving with the ac on and it seemed way warse which seems to me like it would be closer related to the motor, plus, it almost sounded like it was vibrating very fast under hard accelaration and seemed like it gained power when it happened, not sure what to think of it but was wondering if it could be detonationm would that cause the car to seem to have more power while it is detonation is occuring, i appreciate any input anyone can provide
