Default Speedometer problem

When I first got my car the speedometer cable melted to the exhaust and stopped working. I replaced the cable and now sometimes the speedometer works and other times it stays at 0 no movement at all. The cable is not kinked at all and has been routed away from the exhaust enought to where it is not being melted again. I really need this to work because I have been pulled over in my town for going 48 in a 45 in my taxi never mind in my Mustang. J.P.D would have a ball!

sounds like the speedometer gear may have been stripped. Take your cable lose form the tranny and pull the gear out if the teeth look messed up at all, replace it. First thing I would do.

I just put the tranny in last Monday and I don't recall the teeth being damaged on the gear. But I did notice after posting yesterday when the car is driving without the speedometer working the odometer is still accumatating mileage. Doesn't the odometer go off of the speedometer cables input?
