2.3L 5 speed

RE: 2.3L 5 speed
without causing to much comotion how many of the people that are trying to help this guy out have actually done the swap? it seems as though some of you may be guessing at info.
on www.allfordmustangs.com it has a nice article telling someone how to do this and a auto cross member will bolt up to a 5 speed. they are the same thing. no bolts moved forward or anything else that these people are talking about.
as far as the computer and stuff goes there is no need to change any of that stuff. all you have to do is get a ecc tuner board and change the parameters in the trans_load_type_switch it is currently at 6 you want to make it at 0 so there is zero hesitation since you will no longer need a delay for the auto.
don't take this stuff as gospel but i have read a million post on this swap cause i am in the middle of it as we speak, pedal assembly and speedo cable parts are complete. like i said i have read a bunch of threads and articles and not one of them has said to change computer wiring other then what came with the five speed and they all say you can use the auto cross member

Is there a site or any thing that will explain this more? oh and thank you for that info...

RE: 2.3L 5 speed
yeah I have seen about a dozen grenade all over the place....first gear is low as hell which will help a slow moving 5.0...input shaft isn't harden as a 5.0 t5
ORIGINAL: ZachW04Stang
Have you ever done it or are you just doing what you've heard? Its really no weaker then the 5.0 t5. Powershifting and clutch drops are going to destroy it just like they destroy a 5.0 t5. Local guy runs a mustang with built motor and 200shot through 4 cyl tranny and for past 2 years w/ no problems. The only difference is the input shaft, gearing in it is a little lower but thats not a bad thing.
You will need a different pilot bearing: bca-202SS
If you can't find that part number its a pilot bearing for a 83 ranger with 2.2 diesal
ORIGINAL: AdderMk2
get a v8 tranny, the gear ratios in the 4 banger trans are horrible, you will also need to find the proper pilot bearing for that tranny..
not worth it IMHO.. you WILL kill the pos 4 cyl tranny

RE: 2.3L 5 speed
as far as the pilot bearing goes, a machine shop can make you a smooth bushing for about $10 not sure if thats more exspensive than a pilot bearing or whatever, but it worked on somebody's car i used to know, and i think a guy told me he did the same thing on another site. jsyk

RE: 2.3L 5 speed
you'll need to change ecu the manual cross mumber will work from a 4 cylinder I should know I converted my 92 2.3 to a 5.0 the 4 cylinder tranny will work you'll need a 5.0 clutck and change the pilot bearing the 4 cylinder has a smaller input shaft tip. and the ratios in all the gears are diffrent first has a 3.94 vs a 3.35 in the v-8 t-5 I hated how quick the 4 cylinder tranny wound out!! so I switched to a 5.0 plus the torque rating is 225 vs 260 or 300 depending on the year of the 5.0 tranny!!! 4 cylinder trannys will work but why waste the time even if it's cheaper do it right and in the long run it'll save money

RE: 2.3L 5 speed
Look for a wrecked 5.0 doner car. I Paid $300 for mine and it had most of the parts I needed. I am in to it less than $3000.00 and that is with a Rebuilt Motor and T5 Transmission. This also includes the purchase price on both cars. I haven't calculated the total yet but I am thinking I am at about $2600 right now. But I fried my rear end so I have to add that in.
Look for a core with third gear out and fix it. It will a lot cheaper in the long run. You should be able to find a core for less than $50.00.
