Default speedometer not working right

when i start my car the speedo reads about 20-25mph, then while driving it reads 40 or 60 only and bounces around until if finally falls all the way over. what could this problem be? i just bought new gears that are going to get installed soon and a new speedo gear. could it be a bad speedo gear??

It could be a bad speedo gear, a bad speed cable, or a bad speedo cluster, there are springs in the cluster... try the gear first, then try to grease the cable or replace it. Last I would do is the cluster.

You'll need to possibly replace the speedo head unit mine bounced violently between 20 to 60 once I replaced the head unit it was all good again but check the basics first like the speedo gear that plugs in to the tail shaft and make sure no teeth are missing and that the cable works.

Hmm I had that problem too. Mine was at first bouncing around alot but never pinning itself( below 140). The speedo cable was kinked as well as the speedo head broken. The speedo cable was replaced and the needle continued to bounce around, this time it was starting at 20mph and pinning itself like you says yours is doing. For some reason, sometime in winter time(dont know when, i stopped using my speedo), it corrected itself, or got stuck in a favorable position. Its right on the money all the time now. I guess what im trying to say is i think its your speedo head.
