94 timing

94 timing
I'm new to the Mustang scene so bare with me, I have a 94 5.0 GT. I went to set the timing because I notice some pinging and thought it may have been advanced to high. I took out the plug to set the base timing at 10 degrees (yes timing gun was on the #1). After setting it at 10 degrees, I turned the car off and reinserted the plug and started the car, the timing was now at 20 degrees with the plug in. I took it for a spin around the block and I couldnt even touch the gas, as it detonated all over the place. I then left the plug in and tried to set the timing at 10 degrees, and as you can guess, the timming was bouncing, I did retard it to aprox. 10 degrees, but this was with the plug in. Can anyone give me some advice on this? Arn't you suppose to set the timming without the plug in? And if so, why does it jump to 20 degrees when its re-inserted. Any advice would be appreciated...and yes, I tightened the distributor after setting the timing....thanks

RE: 94 timing
You are supposed to set the timing with the spout unplugged. My understanding is that when the spout is plugged in it allows the computer to adjust and change the timing based on what the car is doing.

RE: 94 timing
Disconnecting the SPOUT = taking the computer out of its spark control job. Stock setting is a base initial of 10° BTDC on which the computer adds advance based on load, acceleration, temperature, etc, etc. Having the timing "jump" to 20°-24° when you reconnect the SPOUT is normal = it's a confirmation the computer is doing its job.
If you have a pre-detonation problem in your '94, you need to start checking for other causes....carbon buildup, having an EGR working, but not introducing exhaust gases into the cylinders, etc, etc......suggest to start with a DIY KOEO/KOER/Cylinder Balance Self-Test.

RE: 94 timing
I have to run 93 octane in my 94.When you get the timing worked out, try looking at the MAF senor, a dirty one can cause pinging bad, due to lean mixture, change fuel filter, A 180* t-stat would cause the ECU to richen the mixture slightly. And as mention EGR , run some fuel system cleaner throughot, it removes some of the buildup.

RE: 94 timing
I would set the timing back to normal with spout connector in then reinstall it. take it to a shop hand have a really good induction/decarbonization performed try to find a shop that uses the BG decarbonization system works wonders!!! also if your check light is on have that diagnosed first that'll verify egr operation with koer test
