Default hci swap

I want to put a new upper and lower intake and headsin my 88 stang. I have speed density and I've checked into getting a mass air conversion. I talked to a person today about it and they said the kit would cost me $800 alone and then another $400 to put it in. This seems very expensive to me. Can I do this conversion myself? And is it possible to get this kit cheaper than $800? Also could I just stay with speed density and still change heads and intake?
I've done alot of research and alot of people said that you can stay with speed density as long as you don't change the cam to something too "aggressive" and others say you need to change to mass air before those upgrades Which one is it? Or are both comments correct? Thanks for any help and advise you can give me!
