connect the timing gun to the battery and the clip to number one plug. stock timing is 10 degrees so mark on the balancer 11 12 13 so on with white out. so say if you want to set your timing to 13 you mark 13 on the balancer with white out and set the gun from 0 to 3 so in other words 10+3= 13 degrees obviously. then just unbolt the distributor a little bit just to be able to move it. dont take out the bolt! then start the car point the gun at the balancer and move the distrib until the whiteout line matches up and becomes flush with the indicator. then tighten the bolt.

also disconnect the connector in the back of the distributor or the computer will try to make up for the difference in timing

You dont have to adjust the gun. 92 is correct. Clean your balancer so you can see the numbers and follow the above directions. Dont forget to remove the spout connector that is inline with the ignition module mounted to the distributor before you adjust your timing. When you have it set at what you want, put it back. It just pulls out. The gun will pulse light by the spark on the number 1 cylinder. Connect the clamp around the plug wire that goes to the front cylinder on the right(passenger side). The alligator clamps to the positive terminal on the battery. If you hear the engine pinging when you are turning the dizzy, back it off. You should be safe for a 3 to 4 degree advance.

Quick question, do I have a spout connector on my '84 Capri? I've got a Mallory HEI distributor, is it on my distributor? Somewhere else running to my distributor?
