Speedo jumping around after 30 mph
Hey there ..
I have a '91 GT pretty much stock, flowmasters, perf chip, K&N air intake is about it ... not that it makes much difference (I think) for this question. Each time I go over about 30 mph the speedo needle starts jumping around all over the place .. anywhere from 40-80+ and any were in between .. its not effecting performance so not essential to fix but I'm always thinking about going over the speed limit when the fuzz is around ... I usually drive by "feel" rather than watching the speedo but any one has seen this do you know what it is ?? I just bought a fox body repair manual and going through things so will figure it out eventually but if any one knows or has a clue that would be cool [8D]
cheers

RE: Speedo jumping around after 30 mph
I would first check the speedometer cable houseing and cable. It may be dragging inside the houseing or maybe burned thru next to the exhaust.
If the cable visually checks out ok or is bad, I would then inspect the gear in the transmission end to make sure it is not skipping from worn down or stripped teeth. If your this far try turning the cable using the gear by hand to see if it binds up or drags just to double check the integrity of the cable and housing.
If the cable and gear both check out fine then the last thing it could be is the speedometer itself.

Thanks very much mate ... you've given me enough to probably solve it .. I have a feeling the gears or the cables going to need replacing (I'm pretty new to all this so everything is a learning experience [sm=smiley20.gif])

Ha! Electric speedos suck! My 92 E-150 work van has one and for almost a year it didn't work! Odometer didn't work either. I think I finally traced it to a broken ground in the tail light area. After fixing that, it has been working! LOL! It sucked driving it but at least it kept all those extra miles off!
