Make sure your o2 sensors are tight. I think i might be the only one this has happend to. I keep suggesting it and i've never heard from anyone that this was their problem.

would switching from an H-pipe to an X-pipe help out the noise any or can that not be helped due to longtube headers?

Well tehre are no cats, so that takes one of my ideas away. I was also thinking that maybe you just have something loose under there. Have you put the car up on jack stands yet? Do what you can to get under there and then shake it around a bit to see if you can hear what it's coming from. Ive seen mufflers bump against the frame but that's more of a clunking sound. But it's not uncommon for the bolts at the rear of the midpipe to come loose, perhaps just enough to let a washer rattle.

I noticed you said you can barely hear it at idle... can you hear it enough to get under there and pinpoint hte source (whtout burning the **** out of yourself.) Does it get louder as the speed increases or as the RPM increases (yes, there's a difference, lol.) Also, does it make a difference if the road is smooth or rough?

smoothness or roughness of the road makes no difference. its a whistling sorta noise and it seems to be coming from the front part of the midpipe. yesterday it was put on a lift at a local muffler shop and checked out and nothing is really loose, but could be just enough for some air to slip through. also, there are absolutely no leaks, which suprised everyone working on it.

There's a HUGE difference between a "rattle" and a "whistle." If it's near the front, it could be associated with the tube that runs to the smog pump. Is that still attached or is it disconnected? Whatever it is (connected or not) try the opposite and see if it changes anything at all (just temporarily.) such as the loudness, tone, pitch, etc.
