Default problem starting

I've been having a problem starting my 90 lx. When i turn the key it clicks and the solenoid makes a humming sound but starter doesnt do anything. I just replaced the solenoid and before i replaced it when i turn the key it would click and there would be no sound from the solenoid. Is my battery toast , bad connection, or is my starter dead?

Desperate for ideas, thanks

They first thing I would check is the battery voltage.Make sure the battery is full charged. Then if it does the same thing I would look at the starter.

Advanced Auto will check batteries, alternators, starters for free! Sounds like you have a dead battery at least go check it out. If you dont have a battery charger pull it and go have it checked first. Dont go buying parts if you can help it. If your headlights are nice and bright than your battery is probably ok. if it wont crank then maybe your starter is the problem.
Any other ideas may include changing out the engine, or buying a car that runs, or you can start at the basics. Dont ask for other ideas when someone posts the starting points unless you have already tried it, and posted the results! K THX BYE!

Either a fried starter (very common) or a bad connection somewhere in the system... Check for loose connections first, then check the battery, then check the starter.

Thanks for all the help. Tried all your ideas now minus replacing the starter my next step. thanks for tip on checking the starter and a garage. Should the solenoid make a buzzing sound when ignition is engaged. Oh yeah when the problem started i turned the key and heard like a frying or snapping sound. After that all i would get was a click.
again thanks for the help
