Default 302 / 351 differences

Hey Guys Great forum - but I need help. My 89 5.0 engine has just given up and Ive got a friend who has a performance engine currently in a Bronco that I can have; the problem is that hes not sure whether its a 302 or a 351 or a 357 etc etc Are there any visible differences between the engines, or does anyone have the vin codes for the different sizes.

Thanks

JW

The 351 block is taller. If it is an older 302, the firing order is different than a 351. There should be different casting numbers on the blocks, but I don't know them.

If you can't tell by looking you coukld remove a headbolt from each. If they are the same diameter then his is a 302 block also. If his motor has a larger diameter headbolt, then it's a 351 block.

Although I am the one who am writing this post, it does seem like a silly method to me.

Not always true. Sure the 351 comes with 1/2" head bolts and the stock 302 comes with 7/16" head bolts but it could be like the engine I am building now, 347 stroker with head studs drilled and tapped to 1/2".
