Check engine light....

Check engine light....
is acting up. Recently took a road trip and it only happened twice. But when im driving it will come on all of a sudden for about 10 seconds then go off. At first i thought that it would go off only when i would downshift and floor the gas pedal but i dont think thats it.
The other day it came on again when i was just 1/3 of a mile from autozone so i was being careful trying to get there and check it but it didn't last through the first stop light.
does anyone else have this problem? any ideas on how to check it?
btw, its a 95 gt...

RE: Check engine light....
haven't changed anything, there are times when i take off around idle that it does feel a little sluggish and there was about 3 weeks where it wouldn't stop overheating for no apparent reason. but one day it just started running fine... ill go see if i can get the codes anyway later...

As always pull your codes when you get a CEL. But if I had to take a shot in the dark at this one.... O2 sensors?

RE: Check engine light....
weird you should say that. the same thing was happening to me in my 94 5.0 for a while. The check engine light would come on and it would start idle surging for a little bit. I would give it more gas check engine light would go off and it would be fine. Well then the check engine light came on for good and it was my MAF sensor so you might want to clean it out or replace that if these are the common symptoms of your car. I know it made my car run really rich all of a sudden. If its not that sensor run a can of Sea Foam in it its a great cleaner and put some good 91 octane gas in it (which you should already be doing if its a 5.0 HO). Hope I can help!

there isn't any change in the way it rides / feels when its on, it just comes on. i'd say the whole sluggish feeling might have something to do where everything on that effin car is worn out! and 180,000 on the engine with the previous owner driving it for 6 years w/o even an oil change... just worries me about the light...

RE: Check engine light....
Anytime the CEL turns on, the system runs under a "limp mode"......called FMEM (Failure Mode Effects Management). Check the system for codes, ask the ECM, ID the failures and correct them.
