because your probably not getting up to operating temperature. the temp sensor for the fan reads the coolant temp. it controls when the fan turns on and off, and it is also a vital computer issue. your car running too cold(ie. without thermostat) will make the car continuously in a richer fuel table because its not warming up to operating temperature

im pretty sure it does get up to operating temperature since it is 100+ degrees here. what happened was that the top hose on the radiator came loose and all of the water/coolant spilled and the car overheated. then after i fixed the hose and the temperature went down, it ran fine for like half an hour. the temperature started climbing and i pulled over the fan wouldnt turn on. what should i do?

it would more than likely mean not enough coolant/air pocket
you should try and figure out why the gauge doesn't work either. the sensor for it is located to the right of the distributor, 1 wire hookup.

As I mentioned before unplug the connector from the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor on the front of the lower intake manifoldand see if your fan comes on, if it does that is more than likely the problem. I know I am a newbie so I must not know what I am talking about but I've been doing the 5.0 thing along time

ok i just unplugged the ect sensor and the fan turned on. so i will need to replace that. also, what do i have to replace tomake sure the temp gauge works. as it is now, the needle is all the way to the right laying down and at times it jumps and measures the temperature correct. thanks
