Gears ....!

RE: Gears ....!
What kinda car we referring to, and what kind of driving and racing do you do? Each mustang type through the years respond differently to different gears and come with different stock gears from the factory becauase of this... their is no "end all" or best gear period... different gears for different folks and different power levels.
As a general rule though... 3.55's - 3.73's are the norm for 5.0's and 3.73'- 4.10's are the norm for 4.6's
Honestly for 5sp cars, I like 3.73's for 5.0's and 4.10's for 4.6's - I spend alot of time at the strip though but I also do alot of highway driving and have no problems with either gear. Actually a friend of mine has 4.30's on his '02 GT and thats the way to go with a NA 99+

RE: Gears ....!
I use to have a 1992 lx 5.0 5spd car and at first I put in 3:73's and absolutely loved them, I drive my car every day in many different driving situations, from going 50 miles on the highway to just puttering around town. I had a friend of mine that swore to me I would like the 4:10's better so i put them in. I hated them, my gas mileage was not too different with the 3:73's xs. stock but the 4:10's on the highway sucked. Also most of my rear suspension was stock and the 4:10's only made wheelspin worse than it allready was. Forget about getting traction at all in rain. Now I have a 1990 lx 5.0 but it had an AOD I think the final gear ratio is lower than 5th gear in the t5 but i am not sure so i am going to have to do some research as to which gear i am going to go with in this car but most likely I will put in 3:73's. I like the every day driveability of them and I still feel the e/t difference between the 3:73's vs. the 4:10's is negligable enough to warrant gas mileage concearns especially with the cost of gass nowadays
hope this helps,

RE: Gears ....!
look, if u got lots of power ie:475-500hp+....i say get 3.55's. But if ur a guy with bolt-ons and maybe a nice h/c/i setup, and drives it everyday...3.73's. But if u dont worry too much about gas and u go to the track often...try 4.10-4.30's. They'll make u feel like ur in a rocket, but ur wallet will be shallow quick with gas!. 3.73 seem to be the forums "cant go wrong" gear...my vote is 3.73's.

RE: Gears ....!
Well let me help you with your decision. Please keep in mind that all cars react differently. I just took out my stock 3.08's with wich I was getting about 205 Miles to the tank, and I don't do a lot of freeway traveling, but I do go to the track often. I just put a set of 4.10's in and my car gained about 50Miles to the tank. Now I get around 255 Miles to the tank, and the car is a blast to drive. Acceleration in 5th gear is excellent! When before there was no acceleration in 5th. At highway speeds (80MPH) I am only at about 2600-2700 RPM VERY VERY Withstandable.
They were an awesome upgrade for me, but like I said all cars react differently, and do so because of driving styles. I had heard of people being disappointed with their 3.73's but have never heard of anyone being disappointed with their 4.10's... Hope this helps with your decision.

Jesus lots of 4.10 haters in the crowd[:'(]
Theyre a great gear for an N/A 5spd fox.
A lot of people fear the gear. Not as bad as most people say.
I'm running 4.10s in my car now, gas mpg is absolutely fine
Just don't keep it revved to like 4k and drive around like that and mpg wont change.
I do little highway driving so it doesn't effect me at all.
Wonderful gear at the strip with my "slicks"
and they arnt bad in the rain unless you're a jackass and just punch it all the time.
Made a post about my speeds and rpm's a while back.
May have to dig for it deep within the 5.0 section
Think I made the post like August or September?
And one speed I do remember
First gear was still very useable, think I can bring it to 40 or 45 @ 6k rpms

RE: Gears ....!
why dont u go in between and get the 3.90s-right in the middle of the two ur deciding over-alot of other threads say 4.10s make the driveshatft vibrate, and they don't like the 3.73s. so y not go with the in between?
