Default hot undercharging alternator

While I was on leave from Iraq I got my 83 running finally after almost 6 years of ownership. I wired up an alternator from an 87 and up splicing into my 83 wiring harness. I studied and compared the wiring from each set of years and I'm pretty good with schematics so I'm pretty sure I got it right. But my alt seemed to be runningoverly hot and was only charging at around 12.5-12.9 volts, checking at the battery. I know its supposed to be in the high 13's to low 14's. The wiring did not get hot though so I know its right. I didn't have time to take it to the parts store to get it checked and yes I know this should be my first step. But anyway does any of your alternators run what seems to be hotter than normal?

Default RE: hot undercharging alternator

i had the same problem once. turned out the belt was slipping on the alt pulley but not making any noise. try starting the car and letting it idle for 15 seconds. touch the pulley and see if its hot cause thats all the time it took my pulley to reach skin burning temperature.

pics of how its wired might be helpful
