My new Fox Overheating...

RE: My new Fox Overheating...
Mine was overheating a bit in traffic this weekend and I replaced the thermostat with a 160* one and drove it around town in traffic and it didnt even come close to being hot.
I also drained the radiator and put some cooling chemical (not antifreeze) in it but I forgot the name of the chemical- I bought it on clearance at Advance and figured its worth a try- its supposed to lower coolant temps up to 28%.

My clutch is still pretty stiff even when it is cold. I am pretty sure that my fan clutch is not the problem. Do you think the pulleys could be turning my fan too slow at idle? The previous owner put them on, and i'm not sure what brand they are.
Also is 12 degrees pretty common for timing advance? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I am new to the mustang performance scene.

pretty sure those underdrive pullies might be screw with ya' and yes theres no need to buy an expensive rad just yet, the stock one is fine if everything else is in proper working order

RE: My new Fox Overheating...
Hey man, new here, but my 93 5.0 LX has same problem. Has Fluydine rad, black magic puller fan, motorvator pullies, hypertech thermo, Summit high flow water pump. Runs exactly as described overheating. 5 spd. When in a low gear at high rpm for extended time temp goes up, when get in 5th and run lower rpm cools down. Always runs 200 on freeway, sometimes 210 till get "clean air", nobody in front to block air, it'll creep back to 200. Any suggestions? What should timing be? Have TFS Track Heat, 24# inj., C&L MAF w/24lb sample tube BBK Cold Air, 70MM throttle body w/spacer.

If temp is fine in traffic, then just like stated, your rad. is fine. Do you still have the fan shroud? If your running 230-240 plus, figure out the problem, that is too hot for anything other than a very short amount of time.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Yes I still have the shroud in place. My water pump was also put on new with the rebuild. I plan to try factory pulleys first, then an electric fan if the pulleys don't work. Also, it has only crept up to 230+ once or twice, and I either shut it off or took it for a highway drive to cool it off. I will let you guys know what happens. Also where can I get factory crank and water pumppulleys. Most junkyards wont allow me to remove them from their motors.

something to not overlook is that if its a freshley built motor that you could have a head gasket problem. if the install wasnt correct then it could possibly be blown causing this. just something to think about. also if you do decide on a aluminium radiator and electric fan then pm me and i will get with ya on it. also dont forget that the more timing you you run on a motor thats been bored over it will run a little warmer than normal. my 306 got a little warmer with every timing advance even with a 180 thermo and a electric fan setup.

I was having the same problem with my car a while back. I replaced the rad for a copper/brass 3 core and replaced the stock thermostat with a 180 and everything was perfect. I cant get over 210 if I tried lol

Thanks Iceman...I have kept that in mind. I check the oil and filler capevery few days for water or the infamous milky substance, but it's allstill very clean. What advance are you currently running? I am still trying to find out if 12 degrees is o.k. I really think it is a minor problem or it would be overheating all the time.
