Default GT-40 heads ?

I just bought a 92 gt and i was looking to upgrade it a bit. GT-40 heads are a good swap i hear but i do not know much about them. What kind of cars do them come off of? Do i need to get a gt40 header or do they use the same as the stock heads. Can you get the gt-40 heads ported or would they be too big for the stock bore of the motor? Any other comments would help too, this is my first post.

Congrats on joining the forum! GT40's are good heads, they came originally on the 93 Cobra's. They respond well to porting as long as you have the accompanying pieces to get the full benefit from. Like an aftermarket intake, better flowing exhaust and gear you will have a real car on your hands. You could find better heads but if you are on a budget build you have a great starting point.

GT40 heads came in Cobras, Explorer, Mountaineer and Lightning....... it's basically and OEM head with better flow characteristics than the E7s, etc but do not require special or modified headers (like the GT40p heads). A good port work on a set of GT40 heads would definitely improve the engine performance, and the best place (IMHO) to get them worked would be Thumper ..... he did a set of GT40p heads for a customer project I'm working on, and the quality of his work is excellent.

i believe its 95-97 exploders have the GT40's and the 97-up had the GT40P's. The P's flow slightly better, but they will require different headers or some creative dimpling with a hammer on the headers primary tubes to make sure your spark plugs clear. If you grab a set from a 95-97 explorer it has been said that you need to get like .030 milled off the heads to bump the compression back up, but if you do this you need to verify pushrod length before buttoning everything back up (you should always verify pushrod length anyways). lasty, if you find a donor vehicle grab the intake as well, it outperforms the stock 5.0 intake by a pretty decent amount.

oh yeah, and welcome to the forums [8D]

yes they will work with a typhoon intake, for best results you'll want to to open up the intake ports on the typhoon to match the larger ports of the heads

yea the ports on the typhoon looks like someone just s*** them out. lol theyre horrible. i had to make my own upper gasket and the ports didnt even match up. i dont really know how to mark them to port matchthem but when i do the heads thats when ill port match everything.
