Car completly dies then fires back over...... help
1985 mustang gt, carbed, with a dizzy and ignition box. I can be driving down the road and the engine just completly dies, and when it dies the radio gets killed to, it just shuts off and i lose all of my radio presets. but if i put it into N or P and crank on it, the engine will fire right back over and all is well. Every once in awhile it will completly die, the rpms drop to 0, but then it will mysteriously kick back to life ( this doesnt happen all the time). post ideas or questions for me i will be on all day.

Personally I'd check your battery connection for possible corrosion and or loose or dirty connection...even though you may not see any...I'd still clean them with a terminal cleaner and check all block grounds

Yeah, it's an electrical issue, you're losing the entire electrical circuit somewhere and it's killing everything. So yeah, check for corroded/loose ground etc

One possibility and easy check is pull the cover on your column and check to see if your ignition switch relay is separating.
This is an image I used showing where I used zip ties to prevent mine from separating.

it has to do with the ignition switch, its not wanting to stay put in the key on position, its moving around and falling out of the key on position i think, then again it might be that relay box, i will pull my wheel cover and check. ya when the engine dies, so does the whole car i lose power to EVERYTHING.

Ford Recalls 9 Million Vehicles [hr] On April 25, 1996 Ford Motor Company announced the recall of approximately nine million cars, trucks and minivans that may be equipped with a faulty ignition switch that may be responsible for causing hundreds of fires. In no case has any death or serious injury resulted from these fires. The recall covers 1988-93 models sold in both the U.S. and Canada that Ford says, "In a very small number of vehilces, the ignition switch could cause an internal short circuit, creating the potential for overheating, smoke and possibly fire in the steering column of the vehicle." The faulty ignitions switches can cause a short circuit that may lead to a fire whether the vehicle is turned on or off. The following models are subject to the recall: [ul][*]1988-89 Ford Crown Victoria[*]1988-90 Ford Escort[*]1988-92 Ford Mustang including some early 1993 models[*]1988-92 Ford Thunderbird including some early 1993 models[*]1988-92 Ford Tempo including some early 1993 models[*]1988-91 Ford Aerostar[*]1988-91 Ford Bronco[*]1988-91 Ford F-Series Pickup[*]1988-89 Lincoln Town Car[*]1988-92 Mercury Cougar including some early 1993 models[*]1988-92 Mercury Topaz including some early 1993 models [/ul]The Ford Explorer and Taurus, and the Mercury Sable models are NOT included in the recall because they did not use the faulty ignition switch.
