Default timing question need help, want to start tonight.

Ok so i'm setting the timing on my 90 GT, this is my first time doing this, so what I did was I set the timing mark at 0, then set the distributor to number one, I have a little popcorn noise but no start, and yes I made sure it was on the compression stroke. Did I do anything wrong? Do I have to advance the timing? If I advance the timing thats before the 0 or TDC correct? thanks for the help!

which cylinder did you set to TDC? lots of people make the mistake of doing the first cylinder on the right side(facing motor), but fords are backwards in that #1 is the first on the left

no just turn it till you get it running, make sure the spout conector is unplugged also while doing this. once its running keep it running and turn the dizzy till 10* lines up with the pointer

Ok I dont have a timing light so I should just get it running, and the spout conector is that little thing before the connector to the distributor? should it be plugged into the distributor b/c it never was.

and after its running at 10, let it warm up, make sure you unplug the spout on the dizzy and bump it up to 14* for performance.

that spout connector should be unplugged for setting timing. since you dont have a timing light dont mess with your timing wait and barrow one from someone or go out and buy one
