Default Trying to retard timing in a 94

I am trying to retard the timing right now but I running into a few simple problems:

1. What size is the distributor bolt? Use a socket, open-end wrench, or what?
2. I can't see any marks from above, only when I crawl under the car. I have marked 10*. Does it need to line up with the little bracket that says "time" on it?

Any other tips, and the spout is unplugged.
Thanks

use a 1/2 distributor angled wrench = special tool = makes it easy = sears has them!!! look for 0 degrees make a line there and one at 10 btdc and line the pointer up with that mark while pointing the light at it with the spout connector removed... that is line the pointer up with the 10 degree mark if you don't have a adjustable light with the advance dial on it

I haverun 93 octane since I got the car ( March of 2006) due to advanced timing, its about 14-16* form what I can tell. This is a DD, so max performace is not top concern, and 87 octane is ~$.20 a gallon cheaper. Thats not a huge difference, but over the past 14K milesat ~25MPG, it adds up.

Wells its at 10* now and it still pings around4K RPMs under heavy throttle. Thats what I was trying to fix. This is irritating.
