What exactly does the MAF sensor do??
Hey, I was wondering, there is a plug going into the MAF thing. Do I REALLY need that? Or can I throw that piece out and just make some custom piping to join the intake together there, the cheapest MAF ever? I am just wondering if that plug is actually needed and if removing it would have any negative effects on my performance?
the MAF is probably the most crucial part of your fuel injection. There's no reason you cant make a cold air intake and keep the MAF...

Yeah keep MAF, you will NOT gain ANY power by taking it out, you will lose all of it. Just get some small rubber "hoses" to put over the connection with the piping and the MAF and then put some of those circular holders that have a screw in them to tighten and loosen (yeah I forgot what they were called).
Maybe a good thing to do is look at a pic of a cold air intake on some of the guys' cars and fighure out what I am trying to say that way.

Ah, ok, just in case I am confusing the parts all together, the MAF unit is the part up close to where the airbox connects to right?
It's just that I've seen CAI setups that don't seem to have that piece at all since they replace the entire arm, I don't know, I think I'm confusing the parts...

no the maf is a sensor, CAI's may replace the piping either before or after but the maf is always still there. your car "would" run without it there, but it would run poorly except maybe at WOT. taking it off would be about as smart as pouring sugar in your gas tank.
that is the right part but what you are getting confused about is speed density cars and mass air cars the part you are talking about is the mass air sensor the car runs off of to read how much air is coming in to put the right amount of fuel for combustion. Without the MAF your car will run like sh*t and very rich because it doesnt know how much fuel to put in. Speed density cars dont have a MAF and they have a different computer too. SD have just the straight tube from TB to the fenderwell
