Wait that was driver's ed. I am not sure if you are talking about the smog pump or smog in general so let's see if I can kill two birds with one stone (who can actually hit a bird with a stone???).

Smog in general is the "extra" pollution in the atmosphere, and if there is some around your area, the horizon will look a little brown. LA is famous for this, because the wind currents they have blow against mountains, so the smog (being heavier than non poluted air?) likes to stick around until a relatively large wind storm or a change in the wind dirrection. Environmentalists don't like smog and the pollutants from a car in general, so muscle cars died in the early 70s and smog reducing devices were created. One of these devices is a smog pump.

The smog pump is also known as the "air pump", I think, and basically helps your car loose horsepower for the sake of the environment. It recirculates the exhaust (I think the unburned stuff mainly) into your engine (might be right after, my smog pump was broken so I don't know) to burn the stuff that makes you not pass emission tests. I don't know how much the smog pump reduces your emission "points" but it does somewhat so car manufacturers use them in cars to make the environmentalists happy.

I really hope I am correct in this and actually answered your question, mainly because you capatalized smog I'm worried I went the wrong way with this, but oh well. I can't say too much about the smog pump, because like I said mine wasn't working, and I still passed emmissions, so I took mine out. And my argument for that is this: "I dont' use as much gas now so I'm helping save the environment." Hope it holds up if an inspector looks under my hood. =\

If you still have catalytic converters, keep the smog pump. It keeps 'em working well. If you are running without cats, then by all means ditch teh thing. You will probably gain about 5-8 horsepower from one less accessory for the engine to turn. The pump itself weighs maybe 10-15 pounds, so you'll lighten your car a bit too.
