The vehicle:[*]92 coupe[*]8.8 rearend[*]4.10 Pro 5.0 gears[*]31 spline Eaton[*]31 spline Moser axles
Rearend was put together recently by a coworker (Master Tech) at a Lincoln/Mercury dealer that diagnoses transmission and drivetrain as his specialty. Unfortunately I moved away and no longer have the ability to go back to him for help in solving this.
The problem I have is noise. There are three noise issues.
Gear whine is first and foremost. While it is not unbearable it is kind of annoying. I understand most aftermarket gearsets create some whine.... correct? I also realize I have MM heavy duty lower arms (jointed on both ends), and Steeda double adjustable uppers and this will only make matters worse.
Secondly, there is a high pitched whine when off the throttle decelerating. From my research I am to believe this is from not enough preload on the pinion bearing. Does this sound accurate? According to this page, http://www.ringpinion.com/FAQ.aspx#14, my whine is most likely from loose pinion bearing preload.
If the pinion bearing is loose could that cause excessive gear noise when accelerating?
Thirdly, my axle shafts clunk when going from reverse to forward or vice versa. I can also get them to clunk at low speed if i "buck " the car. The carrier was bought off Ebay and was described as installed but not used. I was told it was set into the rear end with the bearings on it only for the previous owner to realize the housing was shot. It was removed and sold to me. The axle shafts were free from a friend for helping him work on his car. As far as we know they are low mileage units and they did not clunk in his car. With the wheel off the car and the brake drum removed, I can manually turn the shaft back and forth duplicating the noise, indicating the splines are sloppy. I can also pull/push the shafts slightly in and out. Do they make tighter tolerance c clips or something?
What would you do to address any or all the above issues? Or should I live with it............... I think I should be able to eliminate the bearing whine and some of the gear noise at least.

simple the ring and pinion gears are not meshing properly, caused by improper shiming. if its already whining and you are still driving it.... its to late. time for a new ring and pinion gear, installed by another guy.

I checked ring backlash, it was .014". 0 runout. Ford says .012"-.015" I believe.
Would it be improper pinion backlash?
The wear pattern looked acceptable, although I'm no expert. Just judging by what I've been able to lookup online.
