I just put a 'new' tranny in and when i put it the shifter in neutral is engaging 1st gear... when i put it in the 1st gear slot, its 1st gear again. when i put it into the 2nd gear slot in 1st again and so on and so forth, even in reverse....

any ideas?

Auto or man? If it's a manual, are you sure you installed the shifter correctly?

it is manual... how ould i have installed it worng? isnt it just that one post into that one hole... haha?

Yup, that's it. Is there resistance on the shifter like it actually feels like it's changing gears or does it feel like it's not doing anything? You say it's a new tranny, from where? Someone o/h it?

i put the shifter in wrong before on my t5. it is pretty easy to do. you might have that shaft wrong in there.

well i took the shifter off from inside the car and found that the piece with the whole in it fell off... it was missing that key, i took a pic of the old one:


any ideas on how to get it on with that ball/spring? and where to get/make a key to work?

there is no key, that piece uses a roll pin to lock it in the shaft.

it cant just fall off

th spring goes inside the hole on the bottom, followed by the bearing (ball)
then you slide the whole thing over that shaft, and pop in the roll pin.
