Spark plug wire setup and sparkplug setup help!!!
Hey guys!
I have never done this before so I need help.
I need to change my spark plugs, my cap and rotor and my spark plug wires.
My questions are:
I bought an MSD cap that says " always install a new rotor wit ha new cap!- rotor, msd ford v8 large caps dists. and msd cap a dapts ___pn 8423 - Rotor, late model ford tfi and msd pn 8455/8456 distributors_pn 8070 "
the MSD rotor I bought says "rotor, ford v8 cap a dapt part no. 8407" my question is, did I get the wrong rotor???
I bought MSD heli-core Blue spark plug wires 8MM, should I change to the red 8.5MM, does the .5 make a noticable difference?
And does anyone know if when I setup my terminals(i'll be using the dual crimp terminals btw) will it be vital that I dont let the conductor pretude beyond the conductor crimp tabs or does it matter?
And my final, and maybe MOST important question, When I put in the new spark plug wires, is it VITAL that I use a torque wrench or can I tighten them with my fingers first and then just tighten them a bit more with a regular socket wrench?? cause I was told it was very important not to over tighten but how much is "over tightening" ???
THANKS ALOT GUYS!!! sorry I always make u guys read so much, lol

its not hard, just take the cap off and then the rotor out, put the new rotor in, its keyed so it can only go in 1 way. u cant mess it up, then transfer over the spark plug wires being sure not to get them mixed up, then replace the wires one at a time

Hey guys!
thanks for the info, I'm gonna go to the part store today in a while and i was wondering if changing the blue msd wires I have that are 8mm for the red 8.5 is a good idea, I mean does the .5 matter? and what size socket do I need to pull the sparkplugs out, 5/8ths socket?
MSD comes with a package that lets you setup the terminals, but as far as lengths, should I cut them shorter than they already are if I can? and whats the best way to run them from the plugs to the cap? over the intake manifold or around it??? and should I buy sleeves for the wires? I have some nice headers that get freakin hot, lol BBK 1 5/8ths equal length headers.... will that give me serious trouble pulling out the spark plugs? cause i'm doing it all at home... should the car be warm when I do this or cold?, should the battery be disconnected?? and should I use sparkplug lubrican't??
SORRY LOL! so manny questions but i want to do all this today so I"m in a huge rush cause im about to go to the store
THANK YOU SO MUCH GUYS!!!!
For your application 8.0 mm should be okay. Getting a nice set of wires alreay prepared to length would be advised. Do it yourself lengths and crimp on ends do not provide as good a seal at the ends, not to mention poor connection if not done right.
Do the job with engine cold.
Should be 5/8 socket, with headers it helps to use spark plug socket that holds the plug in place, best is the one with swivel.
Routing around the front of the valve cover then back looks nice, check through some posted pics to see what looks nice to you.
Lube never hurts as long as you don't go overboard and get it on the connector part.
Make sure wires are not touching headers.

Thanks alot,
I'm gonna go get the 8.5's thought because I want to color match my stuff, and I'm gonna get a red filter and red oil breathable filler cap, and i have a red msd cap, and the red wires would look nice + when I put on my supercharger, i'm gonna have red sleeves =), and i'm getting a 6al box too, and i have a red msd blaster tfi, hehehe etc etc =) so i guess red is the way to go, lol!
As far as the terminal preperation, I have the needle nose plyers to bend the ends, and the wires come with a crimping kit, but the wires are different lengths so I think they came precut...
If I don't cut them does that make a difference? cause I heard the longer they are the more resistance there is per foot... etc etc...
Thanks cobra!
Red should look nice.
longer wires will be higher resistance, each type of wire has a certain resistance per foot so longer does give higher resistance.
Glad to help. Someone had to help me learn the same things, 30 years ago. I am teaching the same things to my 19 year old now.
