I dont know about the casting number but gt40 or any ford 5.0 head is interchangeable between 5.8, it might turn out that your 5.0 has 351 heads, difference between a 302 and a 351 is the deck height of the block.

RE: pulled head
come to think of it, if you heads actually say 351 on them i would tend to think they are early heads (69-74) because after that the castings were the same.
once you have the head off, look under the intake runner and find the casting number, if its a C9 or a D0 you want to get those heads fixed. you'll also want to get hardened exhaust seats installed in both heads (hell this could be your problem with bad compression if it pounded the crap outta a unhardened cast iron seat in the head)

RE: pulled head
Seats are inexpensive, I've hear that the viton umbrella type are the best. If you dont' already have this type on there some machining is required, but you are getting them worked on anyways.

^ bad post, bad.
SEATS are hardened steel and are about 10-15 bucks each to install - you need 8, the intakes do not need to be replaced.
SEALS are what mattkoly is referring to, and umbrella's are the WORST seals you can get. make sure the shop that does the work installs a positive style valve seal, the exhaust seals should be poly-acyrlic or viton - nitrile will get hard very quickly and not seal properly.
of course, we're basing the seat machining off the fact that these are "early" 351w heads. WHAT ARE THE CASTING NUMBERS?
