Default 1983 5.0 cylinder heads

just picked up a bone stock '83 with original 5.0 4V HO. I am planning on pulling the engine for rebuild and performance upgrades. What type of heads do these engines have and are they suitable to reuse for performance application or am i better off with aftermarkets, or GT40's, etc.??

dont reuse those heads for a performance application

1982 - 1984
had C94E-6049-AA heads
8.4:1 compression ratio
and cast pistons
1983 stock power was up to 175hp from 157 the previous year
I will try to find exact cc of heads

also note that this is non roller block/camshaft style

could you drive it as is, and get a 1985-1995 junkyard shortblock or better yet 1987-1992 running longblock to apply your $$'s, time and performance mods to?

----------------------------------------------
couldnt find the cc of the heads but found some interesting info:

While it was rumored that the camshaft used in this engine was a marine cam, in reality the marine cam was ultimately rejected for actual production due to low torque numbers. The camshaft actually used was a design used previously in a 351 Windsor two-barrel passenger car V-8 (more specifically the 1973 Torino).

Ham (not the other white meat btw), his car did not have C9 heads, it has D8OE heads which are exactly like the E7TE's except the chambers are larger and therefore the compression is lower.

to be perfectly honest with you, the car is now almost 25 years old and if it is unmolested it maybe a good idea to LEAVE it that way.

if you really wanna hack it up, the sky is the limit but you'll never get there with those heads

So where are you getting your numbers? Are you 'helping" by just saying that is his head? where is the documentation? Mine is here:
http://www.jason.fletcher.net/tech/s...ons/specs1.htm
So what cc are the heads?
What is the difference between the GT and non GT heads? Share where your information is coming from, site at least one source befores saying somebody is wrong that did site a source. It is just as if you are saying "Hamutoff , you're wrong your source is wrong, and I am providing help to the contrary of your info becasuse I saw something before"

I think that you would be better off using any aftermarket head rather than what you have.
You could easily spend as much $$ on the original heads as new ones would cost.
I'd also look for an '87 or later roller motor.
If you are in a large city, look for a 'pick-a-part' typr wrecking yard. Around here they get $140 for a COMPLETE 5.0 HO motor.....
Good luck on the project, keep posting about how it's going and remember always, it's going to cost MORE than what you thought and it's never really done. Time and patience are the key things here..........

All you have to do is drill and tap holes in the lifter valley for the bracket and get the bracketthat holds roller lifters down and buy new lifters and a cam which you were going to do anyway rather than getting rid of the whole block.
