If your using the same carrier that's in there now you can use the stock shims. If your changing carriers then you'll have to reshim.

That's why I said use ford racing gears. The ring gear is thicker to make up for the smaller pinion gear. 99% of the time it's dead on with the stock shims. If you buy the shim kit and it's dead on with the stock shims then you wasted your money. I just think people should check first. I've had two mustangs with with ford racing gears. One of them are on it's second set of gears and they've always lined up perfect with the stock shims. I just think people should slap it in there and check the backlash and wear pattern with the stock shims because, like I said, it's dead on 99% of the time.

i guess you got lucky we had to change gears in my manuel powertrain class and when the new gears went in nothing lined up right on the old shims it was also a gm rear

Ford gears are good about being right. The rear end man at the ford dealership don't even keep shims. He's installed hundreds of gears and has never had to reshim a rear end. That's with ford brand gears though. Not Richmond or any other brand.

i work at a lincoln mercury dealer we never do rears or anything there its like those damn cars dont break which sucks cause i get stuck doing all the service crap
