rear-end rebuild with new 3.73 gear set! HELP!!!
Hi guys and gals!!!
I need some help to understand what I have to do to rebuild my rear end and put some 3.73's on. I have 95' GT with AODE, so I belive she comes with 2.73 stock right??? Im not going to do the work myself. My cousine is a professional mechanic and he knows his stuff, but he does his work at home and for himself. I doubt he has the specialty tools ( dial indicator, dial caliper, etc.) necessary for the propler intallation of the new gear set. I was reading on a website (http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/5o...5ohtech012.htm) that the easiest way to measure the pinion depth is to measure the thickness of the head of the stock pinion without the shim. Then I do the same with the new pinion. Then I subract the two thicknesses and the result would be the thickness of the shim I would use to add to the new pinion in order to get the correct pinion depth. Is this a good thing to do, or whould I use other, more precice tools. I honestly dont have money to buy these tools, and I doubt my cousine has them, because he does not work on rearends that often, but he is still a good mechanic. What would happen if I dont get the right shim size????? The other tool that the guy from the site used was very complicated to use in my opinion.
Damn, I did'nt know it was this damn complicated to put new gears on my car!!!!![:@][:@][:@][:@]
Any feedback will help!

Hey, I totally forgot about that. You are right, they do rent them out, haha. But do you think they will have these specific tools??? I would think they are hard to find considering the price to buy them.

They won't have a pinion depth gauge. If you are installing FMS gears then you can usually just install them without much measuring. I have done 4 gear changes without ever having to adjust shim size.I wouldn't worry too awful much about pinion depth just backlash and runout.

Well thanks alot for the feedback guys. I'll just use the shim that is in right now again with the new gear set, since its FRPP if should be ok right??? Oh, I lifted my stang from behind in order to figure out the ratio she has right now. I rotated the rear tire 360 degrees and the drive shaft spun ~3.25 tims. Does this mean I have the 3.27 gears on right now??? I though 95 GT's came stock with 2.73???
