didnt those thunderbirds come with 302's as an option even in the depressing times we like to call the early 80's? since your not a ford guy i will make sure its clarified for you that a 302 IS a 5.0
i may be wrong, but i think the years your looking for are 95-97.5 explorer 5.0's with GT40 heads or the 97.5-i forget have the GT40P heads. also, the late 80's early 90's 5.0's had forged pistons from the factory so they are usually considered the best stock bottom ends to work with.
any 302 intake will work with either of those heads, but the intake ports on the heads are larger so to maximize your HP potential you need to do a little port work on the intake to open those runners up.

The 1982 Thunderbird was available with the full range of engine options starting with the 2.3 four banger.Next up was the3.3 liter/200 cubic inch 6, a 4.2 liter/255 cubic inch V8, or a 5.0 liter Windsor V-8.Even at that, the top engine choice only put out 130 horsepower. So, you don't have to claim it's an '80!
I just did an internet search on 1982 Thunderbird and came up with the above info.
