Default a/c cluthch question

I just recevied my newly won a/c clutch from ebay. there is nothing wrong with the one on my car but this one is new and the old one is all discolored and i'm beautifying my engine. my question is do you have to drain the freon to change just the clutch? and is it something I can do. i'm mechinically inclinded, but have never changed a a/c clutch. any input from someone that has changed one would be great.

Default RE: a/c cluthch question

No you don't have to drain the A/C to install it.When you take it apart be very carefull. There is shims between the outer part of the clutch and the inner part that sets the clutch gap.Measure the gap between the clutch and the pulley before you pull it apart. Then when you install the new one the gap needs to be the same.If not it either won't work or will burn up the new clutch.

You should be able to do it pretty easy. You might have to borrow a clutch puller from the local auto parts store. To pull the outer part of the clutch out.I have had them come out easy.Other times they are a pain in the a**.
