I had practically the same symptoms when I did my H/C/I install. My timing was off. I brought #1 up on the compression stroke but made sure the piston was almost TDC then I installed the dizzy and made sure the rotor was pointing to a spot just a tad prior to the #1 spot on the cap.
This worked perfect.

BTW....did you advance your "B" 4 degrees or did you install straight up?

spark plug out,

thumb in hole, youll feel the air pushing your thumb as you turn the crank clockwise

I would say it just needs a tune, my car ran almost the same way with after my HCI swap without a tune (just a canned one for the time being)

Get your timing dialed in, and your fuel pressure right and get it tuned its a night and day difference

Always start with the cheapest stuff first and see how it goes. Don't start replacing parts until you know you need them.

For example, try adjusting timing and fuel pressure.

When the cam is lined up with the crank is that on compression or exhaust or could it be both?

put your thumb over the number one spark plug hole, and turn the engine by hand, when compression comes around it will blow your finger off, if your balancer has not spun on it self, at TDC the balancer should read at 0*, if the rotor is pointing in the correct spot for 0* then the dist has been installed correctly.
